Patoulis Georgios

Patoulis Georgios was born in Athens with origins from Crete. He studied Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and specialized in Orthopedics at “Laiko” University Hospital, where he completed his doctoral thesis on “Deep Vein Thrombosis in Hip Fractures.” During 1998-2000, he pursued postgraduate studies at the National School of Public Health, specializing in Health Economics.

As an orthopedic surgeon, he worked in various primary healthcare structures including IKA Tavros, IKA Marousi-Erythrea-Lykovrysi, and the Municipal Polyclinic of Pefki, while also collaborating with “Henry Dunant” Hospital and “Athenian Clinic.”

His trade union activities began in 1995 when he founded the Association of Medical Residents of Athens-Piraeus, serving as President until 1998. In 1996, he established the “Young Doctors” faction and in 1997 founded the Panhellenic Association “Young Doctors,” serving as President until 2004 while developing voluntary programs in border, island and mountainous regions. In 2002, he established the Association of Freelance Doctors of Attica (E.EL.I.A.), where he currently serves as Honorary President.

In 1998, he was first elected as municipal councilor in Pefki. From 2000-2005, he served as President of the Municipal Enterprise and Municipal Polyclinic of Pefki, institutionalizing healthcare services through Local Government.

In 2004, he founded the National Inter-Municipal Health and Social Solidarity Network, now the WHO National Network of Healthy Cities (EDDYPPY), where he has been continuously re-elected as President, developing nationwide health promotion programs for member municipalities.

In 2006, he was first elected Mayor of Marousi. In 2010, he was re-elected Mayor of Marousi in the first round with 57% of votes, and in 2014 was re-elected for a third consecutive term, again in the first round, with 58%.

In 2008, he became President of the Social Policy and Human Resources Committee of TEDKNA. In 2011, he was elected President of the Association for the Protection and Rehabilitation of Penteli (SPAP) and re-elected in 2013.

In 2011, he was first elected President of the Athens Medical Association. He was re-elected in 2014, 2018 and 2022, becoming the longest-serving President in ISA history. In 2012, he founded the Social Mission Clinic in collaboration with Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens, providing free medical care to thousands in Attica and border regions.

In 2014, he was elected President of the Central Union of Greek Municipalities (KEDE). In 2015, he was elected Vice President of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), and re-elected in 2016.

In 2018, he assumed the Presidency of the Greek Health Tourism Council (ELITOUR), developing initiatives to promote Medical Tourism. He also founded the World Hippocratic Institute of Physicians to highlight Hippocratic Medicine’s universality and connect Greek and international medical communities.

In the 2019 regional elections, he was elected Attica Regional Governor with 66% of votes. In October 2019, he was elected First Vice President of the Union of Greek Regions. In 2020, he was elected Vice President of the European Committee of the Regions, heading the Greek delegation until 2022. His term as Regional Governor concluded in 2023.

His publications include scientific articles in Greece and internationally, books like “First Aid” and “Health Tourism: Past, Present and Future” (published by Ellinika Grammata), magazines “Young Doctors” and “Municipal Health,” and studies like ISA’s “Doctor Inflation in Athens.”

He is married with two sons.
